Marianne Schmitt Hellauer worked with a doctor from Johns Hopkins Hospital to develop the Lyme Disease Research Foundation and served as legal counsel, all on a pro bono basis. Today, the foundation has become the Johns Hopkins Lyme Disease Clinical Research Center.

Hellauer sits on the board of trustees for the University of Baltimore and has mentored law students there.

An estate planning attorney, she was elected in 1995 as a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
