Evelyn Gaines is active in the Baltimore community as the board president of Suited to Succeed, which assists women in transition from unemployment to the work force and a board member of the Maryland Center for Veterans Training and Education (MCVET), which assists women returning from military duty with training in life skills.

Gaines became a board member of the housing advocacy group BNI in 2011, was selected as a board member of the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce in 2012 and was voted Ladies Auxiliary president of VFW Post 521 in 2015.
