Dr. Steven J. Czinn serves as The Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Endowed Professor of Pediatrics and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, as well as director of the University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital. A nationally known pediatric gastroenterologist, he is recognized for innovative treatments for children with chronic gastric and intestinal disorders.

Czinn earned a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, from Case Western Reserve University in 1975 and a medical degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1979. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, finishing in 1985. He then served in the Departments of Pediatrics and Pathology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine before joining the University of Maryland School of Medicine in March 2006.

A leader in his field for more than 40 years, Czinn is an innovator, researcher, teacher and mentor who cares for children with complex and often debilitating gastrointestinal disorders with experience and compassion. His leadership roles include president of the Medical Executive Committee of the University of Maryland Medical System from 2016 to 2018 and membership in the class of 2019 of Leadership Maryland. His honors include the Premier Physician Award from the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and the Health Services Leadership Award from the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The accomplishment Czinn counts as most significant is his work leading his team of nurses, physicians and staff through the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic that began in March 2020. As chair and director, he saw an obligation to keep providing high quality care for the children of Maryland. His nursing and physician leadership put their own lives at risk to keep the doors open, and the University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital admitted young adults ages 18 to 25 to make use of every bed.
