Allegany County Circuit Judge Michael Twigg on Tuesday was named his court’s administrative judge.

Maryland Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Fader appointed Twigg to the role effective immediately due to the upcoming retirement of Judge Jeffrey Getty in June. Getty has served as administrative judge for and the fourth judicial circuit, which covers Maryland’s three westernmost counties, since August 2020.

“Judge Twigg’s longstanding commitment to service and leadership in Allegany County will serve him well as county administrative judge,” Fader stated in a news release.

“In this new role, he will continue advancing the Judiciary’s mission of providing fair, efficient, and effective justice for all. I also congratulate Judge Getty on his upcoming retirement and more than 30 years of exceptional service as a jurist.”

Administrative judges oversee their courts’ budgets, manage trial calendars and perform other administrative functions.

Twigg served as state’s attorney for Allegany County, which includes Cumberland, from December 2002 to January 2021, when he was sworn in as a judge. He was appointed by former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan.

Twigg called the appointment an “extraordinary honor.”

“I look forward to continuing to work with my judicial colleagues, court leadership, and court staff as we work together to ensure that individuals who visit our courts are ensured fair and efficient access to justice for their legal matters,” he stated.
