The daughter of the former director of national intelligence was sentenced to 35 years in prison last week for the 2020 death of her friend.

Sophia Negroponte, 33, was convicted of one count of second-degree murder in November for allegedly stabbing Yousuf Rasmussen during a drunken argument in in February 2020.

One of Negroponte’s attorneys, Andrew Levy, of Brown Goldstein & Levy in Baltimore, declined to comment.

This was the second time she’s been convicted; the Maryland Appellate Court in 2024 overturned her first conviction.

“This is an appropriate and just outcome in light of the seriousness of this crime and the consistent findings of two separate juries who carefully evaluated the evidence,” State’s Attorney John McCarthy said in a press release.

“Our hearts go out to the family of Yousuf Rasmussen. Their strength throughout this process has been remarkable. We hope this provides some measure of peace.”

Judge Terrence McGann presided over the trial and issued the sentence Friday.

Negroponte, who was born in Honduras, is the adopted daughter of John Negroponte, a career diplomat who was the nation’s first director of national intelligence, from 2005 to 2007. He then served as deputy secretary of state until early 2009.
