GBMC begins renovation of radiation oncology unit
The Greater Baltimore Medical Center, commonly referred to as GBMC HealthCare, recently commenced a multiphase renovation project of its radiation oncology unit, hoping to thoroughly transform the existing 12,000-square-foot space.
The effort marks a major investment in patient experience, clinical efficiency and continuity of care, GBMC officials said in a statement. The effort launched last week and involves ongoing collaboration among clinical leaders, facilities, safety teams and design partners, according to a release.
Construction began with the installation of infection control barriers as phased demolition is set to occur “in the coming weeks.” Project completion is slated for spring 2027.
GBMC patients will continue receiving treatment throughout construction.
“This is a complex renovation because the unit must remain open and fully operational,” GBMC senior project manager Jacob Verdis said.
“We’re essentially rebuilding the space in phases around active patient care, which requires an extraordinary level of coordination and planning. The end result will be a state-of-the-art environment that better supports both patients and staff.”
Designed to resemble the Sandra R. Berman Pavilion – GBMC’s home for cancer care – the renovated radiation oncology unit will feature similar finishes and a cohesive atmosphere, according to the health care system’s officials.
The redesigned layout aims to create clear patient zones, enhanced changing areas, ADA-compliant restrooms and improved accessibility.
The renovation is being made possible through philanthropic efforts. The total project investment hovers around $6 million, according to GBMC.
“Guided by what our patients have shared, this transformation strengthens our commitment to providing care in a space that is welcoming, accessible and healing,” radiation oncology manager Shannon Reynolds said.
“We’re looking forward to each step of this transformation and the improved experience it will bring to our patients, caregivers, and staff.”
