State Del. Caylin Young, D-Baltimore City, was charged with misdemeanor second-degree assault after allegedly punching a woman in the chest early in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

Young, who represents a Northeast Baltimore legislative district, was in the car with a woman around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, and “became hostile” after the woman took “what he thought was a wrong turn,” a court document states.

Young “angrily insisted that I pull over and let him drive, which I immediately did without hesitation,” the woman wrote. The Daily Record is withholding her name.

He continued to yell at her, told her to shut up, then “banged me in my chest with a closed fist before I could say anything.”

“Immediately afterwards, I said, ‘Really?’ to which the defendant didn’t respond,” the document states. She said Young refused to apologize.

The incident occurred in Baltimore’s Federal Hill neighborhood. Young is set to appear in Baltimore City District Court Feb. 23.

“Delegate Young denies each and every allegation against him,” his lawyer, Robbie Leonard, wrote in an email. “We have already filed a motion for a speedy trial and look forward to our day in court.”

Young, a 38-year-old attorney, was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2022.
