Queenstown Bank

Kevin Cashen joined Queenstown Bank of Maryland as the President & CEO in 2017 with the objective to modernize the bank while maintaining its heritage as a 120+ year community bank. He has over 42 years of banking experience in the Maryland/Washington DC/Virginia markets across numerous disciplines.

He began his career with Loyola Federal Savings & Loan in 1984 before moving to Signet Bank in 1985. In 2001, he was appointed Senior Vice President of Chevy Chase Bank and President of a de novo consumer finance subsidiary.

What advice would you offer someone interested in banking and finance as a career?

Banking, at times, has a bad rap as a boring business. I tell people that banks are really technology companies that provide financial services. I think banking is a great career as you are in the business of helping people fulfill their dreams by helping them manage their finances. It is the ultimate service business with the opportunity to develop close relationships within your community.

What are the biggest challenges facing your industry?

For smaller banks, the biggest challenges are keeping up with technology, fighting fraud and attracting and retaining quality people.

If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?

I always tell people I should have been a carpenter. I really like woodworking and working with my hands, building and fixing things. My father and grandfather could build or fix anything – I picked up that gene from them. Professionally, I would probably have been a lawyer or real estate professional. No regrets.
