President and CEO of Shore United Bank since July 2023, James M. “Jimmy” Burke has more than three decades of banking experience.

A graduate of the Maryland Bankers School, Burke is a former chairman of the Board of Directors of the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center and former chairman of the Board of Directors for St. Mary’s Ryken High School.

What advice would you offer someone interested in banking and finance as a career?

Find a mentor who will invest their time and energy towards your success and realizing your dreams and then be humble enough to receive their feedback. Also, have an insatiable appetite for knowledge through reading, especially reading on topics you may not agree with so that you can develop understanding and empathy.

What is the biggest challenge facing your industry?

In a word, uncertainty. The current interest rate environment producing a yield curve that continues to be inverted is not conducive to an efficient banking system.

What is your favorite part of living in Maryland?

I have resided in Maryland for most of my life and for generations this has been the  place my family has called home. Whether it has been in southern Maryland or now on the Eastern Shore, without a doubt my favorite part of our state is the people. Hard working and always willing to help a neighbor or others in need.
