Celebrating the launch of its Cyber Range Training Program, Carroll Community College held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday that officially marked its introduction into Maryland’s Cyber Workforce Accelerator program.
The program seeks to prepare students for careers in cybersecurity and information technology, and ensures that Carroll will have on-site access to what is called “the cyber range” through designated remote workstations. According to IBM, a cyber range is “a virtual environment for cybersecurity training, testing and research that simulates real-world networks and cyberattacks.”
Cyber range access will be used for cybersecurity curriculum development and course inclusion as students will get to demonstrate subject expertise and knowledge in a hyper-realistic, stimulating environment.
“Today marks more than a celebratory opening of the Cyber Range, it reinforces the College’s commitment to preparing our students and our region for the future of cybersecurity, technology, and workforce innovation,” Carroll CC President Rose Mince said.
State and local dignitaries, industry leaders and the Carroll campus community attended the ribbon-cutting.
The Cyber Workforce Accelerator program, established in 2024 by the Maryland Association of Community Colleges and BCR Cyber, provides cyber ranges to the state’s 16 community colleges for program training and academic training, according to a release.
The program also helps place students in industry jobs while aiming to address the demands of Maryland’s cyber workforce, school officials said.
“There is a significant need here in Maryland for skilled IT and cybersecurity professionals. Community colleges play a vital role not only in helping meet this need, but also in helping to facilitate meaningful employment for job seekers,” BCR Cyber President Michael Spector said.
“We are excited about the launch of the cyber range at Carroll and the opportunities it presents.”
