Shannon Lee Boisseau Serio serves as principal at Levin Gann PA, where she has practiced since 2018. She joined the firm following her clerkship with the Honorable Michael J. Finifter in the Circuit Court for Baltimore County.

Serio concentrates her practice on family law and general litigation matters, assisting clients with divorce, custody and broader legal disputes. She authored the custody chapter for the 11th Edition of the MSBA’s Maryland Divorce and Separation Law.

Her professional presentations include sessions for the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, Baltimore County Bar Association and the Maryland State Bar’s Annual Legal Summit. She has addressed topics including divorce, custody and reproductive rights, particularly regarding the Appellate Court of Maryland’s decision in Jocelyn P. v. Joshua P., which established Maryland’s approach to frozen embryo disposition in divorce proceedings.

What’s the most important thing you do in your job?

Honestly, it is just being a good listener. Family law is not just about statutes and case law, it is also about people and their stories. Every client comes in with their own experiences and emotions and it is my job to keep an open mind, meet them where they are, and provide counsel. Even if I have handled a similar case, or 10, each client’s experience is unique and deserves my full attention.

No one should feel like they are just another file on my desk.

What qualities do you need to be a successful family law practitioner?

It really takes a mix of grit and empathy. Most of my clients are going through some of the hardest chapters of their lives. They need someone who can not only fight for them, but also someone who genuinely cares. If you can show up with compassion, you will inevitably become a stronger advocate in the courtroom.

Outside of your legal practice, what activities or interests are you passionate about?

I am a total running enthusiast! When I am not running solo, I am running after our son and two dogs while soaking up every bit of family time I can get with my husband. I also love “doing” and getting creative, whether that is working outside in the garden or tackling some new DIY project!
