Gregg L. Bernstein, partner at Zuckerman Spaeder LLP, litigates criminal and civil matters in Maryland and across the country, with a practice spanning white collar defense, health care fraud, internal investigations, public corruption and securities and commercial litigation.

Bernstein began his legal career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland from 1987 to 1991. He investigated and obtained convictions in notable federal criminal matters, including prosecuting the illegal export to Iran and Iraq of a chemical precursor used in the manufacture of mustard gas, a murder-for-hire scheme targeting an IRS agent and the deadly collision between a freight train and an Amtrak passenger train.

Bernstein’s leadership philosophy emphasizes collaboration. “Effective leadership requires an ability to bring different groups together, sometimes with competing interests and agendas, to work toward a common goal,” Bernstein said. “I have found that the way to have the most positive impact on Maryland is not to impose my ‘will,’ but instead, listen to competing views and facilitate a discussion that leads to the right result.”

Addressing governmental challenges, Bernstein noted that agencies often have competing agendas, leading to stagnation.

“The way to break through these impasses is to convince everyone to work together, which is the major way to effectuate meaningful and positive change,” he explained.

Outside his legal practice, Bernstein has eclectic taste in music, ranging from Australian post punk to Americana, and tries to never miss an opportunity to attend live concerts in small venues throughout the state and in Washington, D.C.
