The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore

Shannon Brown serves as vice president of development and strategy at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, where she oversees seven employees and contributes to animal welfare and conservation initiatives. Brown graduated from Dundalk High School in 2006 and built her career through progressive leadership roles in Baltimore organizations.

Brown began her professional journey in 2008 as vice president of business development at Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, where she served for 12 years before joining The Maryland Zoo in 2020. Throughout her career, she has served as board liaison in both organizations while participating in the zoo’s Conservation and DEAI committees.

“I became a Vice President by 30 without a college degree, despite a challenging upbringing,” Brown said. “I achieved this while raising three children and caring for one terminally ill parent and another battling cancer. This journey reflects my resilience, work ethic, and commitment to growth — personally and professionally.”

At The Maryland Zoo, Brown has advanced equity initiatives by leading efforts to modernize dress code expectations for women, championing equal professional rights for non-cis individuals and pushing for the removal of unnecessary higher education requirements in roles where skills and experience matter more than credentials. She has expanded the zoo’s cell phone recycling program to reduce deforestation tied to mineral mining in tropical habitats and ensured conservation messaging is integrated into all event outreaches. Brown successfully advocated for and secured funding to support critical conservation initiatives in Botswana, contributing to global efforts to protect vulnerable species and ecosystems.

Brown’s mentoring approach centers on being present and truly listening, supporting colleagues by providing safe, judgment-free spaces for processing thoughts and finding clarity. She believes most people can navigate their challenges when given appropriate space and support.

“I stand out for my resilience, drive, and ability to thrive under pressure — balancing a demanding career with the complexities of family life and a deep commitment to causes I care about,” Brown said. “High-energy and team-oriented, I bring passion, tenacity, and a strong sense of purpose (and humor!) to everything I do.”
