Within the legal community, Smith serves as co-editor in chief of Trial Reporter for the Maryland Association for Justice, a position she has held since 2020. She joined the Maryland Association for Justice Board of Governors in June 2025. Her professional recognition includes receiving the Maryland Association for Justice President’s Award in 2020 and being named to The Daily Record’s Power List in 2023.
Smith has demonstrated her commitment to legal education through volunteer work as a mock trial judge for the University of Baltimore School of Law’s trial advocacy class and high school mock trial programs. She has also spoken at Milford Mill Elementary School’s career day, sharing with young students what it means to be a lawyer and how the legal profession can serve those who need help the most.
“My most significant achievement has been using my legal skills to create a meaningful impact on the lives of others,” Smith said. “I’ve done this as a trial lawyer representing brain-injured children and individuals harmed by negligence, as a pro bono attorney advocating for a young man facing deportation and by volunteering to help expunge criminal convictions for those seeking a second chance.”
Smith’s practice focuses on representing individuals and families who have suffered devastating harm, often at the hands of powerful institutions. Her work includes representing children poisoned by lead in Baltimore’s rental housing and securing justice for women and families impacted by medical malpractice. Smith has worked to illuminate systemic failures and challenge implicit and explicit biases that contribute to poor outcomes for women and marginalized communities in the health care system.
“I stand out for my commitment to using the civil justice system not only to secure compensation for my clients, but to challenge systemic inequities—particularly those affecting women and marginalized communities in health care,” Smith said. “My work goes beyond litigation; it aims to drive institutional reform and inspire accountability in powerful systems.”
