Flow Therapy

Dominique Thornton serves as chief executive officer and lead clinician at Flow Therapy, a virtual mental health counseling and wellness company based in Fort Washington. Thornton leads a team of four employees in providing culturally responsive mental health services to communities of color through her Prince George’s County-based practice.

Her career in mental health spans multiple settings, including her previous role as an outpatient mental health clinician at The Children’s Guild from 2018 to 2021, crisis counselor at Safe Journey House in 2018, and qualified intellectual disabilities professional at Community Residences, Inc. in 2017.

Her most significant professional achievement centers on mental health advocacy at the state level. “Establishing Maryland’s official Mental Self-Care Day is my most meaningful accomplishment,” Thornton said. “While society often stops at mental health awareness, this holiday pushes for real action. It brings a critical focus, specifically to mental self-care, rather than general self-care. It’s a vision I dreamed of in high school, now brought to life for the community.”

Thornton’s commitment to expanding mental health access drives her work with Flow Therapy, where she focuses on bridging gaps in mental health care for communities of color. She advocates for a holistic, culturally responsive and justice-informed approach to care that addresses systemic issues including racism, poverty, community violence and educational disparities. Her plans include working with state and national representatives to influence policy and expand sustainable, community-centered care.

In addition to her clinical work, Thornton mentors young women through Beautiful I Am, Inc., teaching mental health concepts through interactive activities including Emotions Jeopardy, stress ball making and meditation sessions. She is developing a youth mental health ambassadorship program designed to teach emotional regulation, self-awareness and coping skills while training participants to recognize mental health distress in others.
