Sherry B. Perkins, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, serves as president of Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, where her leadership has helped establish the institution as a cornerstone of community health care.

Perkins’ professional journey began with her decision to become a nurse, which she described as her precursor decision to a distinguished career. Her path led her from academic medical centers to her pivotal role as chief nursing officer at LHAAMC, which she credits with having the greatest impact on her career.

“After tremendous learning in academic medical centers, I had the opportunity for the first time to work in a large community hospital. It is here that I understood that most of the care in the U.S. is provided in community hospitals,” Perkins said.

Under her leadership, LHAAMC has received its 12th consecutive “A” from Leapfrog for patient safety, its third Magnet designation for nursing excellence and numerous “best hospital” awards from U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek.

Perkins’ impact extends beyond the hospital walls. Perkins led Maryland to establish the first statewide nursing graduate residency and co-led the National Nurse Staffing Task Force. Her advocacy for patient and family-centered care has influenced hospital practices nationwide.

Her greatest professional pride comes from team accomplishments.

“My greatest source of pride has been seeing the work of the teams with which I have had the privilege to serve. I’ve been able to work with colleagues with shared values that have grown together in a shared mission,” Perkins noted.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented the biggest challenge of her career, requiring her leadership through uncertainty, patient isolation and supply shortages.

Perkins maintains strong community involvement, serving on boards for the United Way of Central Maryland, Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, Maryland Hospital Association,

Maryland Nurses Association, Maryland Patient Safety Center and Maryland Organization of Nurse Leaders.

Her commitment to community service extends to mentoring professionals across industries, youth sports coaching and regular blood donation. Perkins received a YWCA Leaders in the Workplace Award and represented Maryland at a Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action National Summit.

She holds a Ph.D. and is recognized as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, credentials that reflect her commitment to health care excellence and leadership.
