Maria Darby

Maria Darby serves as chief operating officer at Dwyer Workforce Development in Baltimore, where she leads initiatives addressing health care workforce shortages while creating opportunities for underserved populations.
With over 25 years dedicated to workforce development, Darby implements DWD’s three-pronged mission: providing comprehensive support to individuals pursuing health care careers, addressing critical health care staffing shortages and improving community well-being.
“I work every day to further our three-pronged mission: provide comprehensive support to individuals who lack opportunity and aspire to pursue a career in the health care industry, alleviate a severe health care workforce shortage, and improve the lives of seniors and the community at large,” Darby said.
At DWD’s Baltimore headquarters, Darby oversees operations focused on breaking down barriers for those seeking health care industry employment.
Her leadership approach draws from extensive experience in health care services and education-focused nonprofits.
Darby’s professional journey reflects consistent dedication to expanding opportunity. Before joining DWD, she held leadership positions in health care services organizations where she focused on empowering individuals and communities through targeted workforce initiatives.
Beyond her primary role, Darby maintains active community involvement across Maryland. She serves on various nonprofit boards and leads initiatives specifically designed to uplift women leaders and promote educational advancement throughout the state.
“Beyond my work at DWD, I’m committed to community outreach, serving on various nonprofit boards and leading initiatives that uplift women leaders and promote education throughout Maryland,” she explained.
Darby’s nomination for the Community Outreach award comes from a colleague who recognizes her sustained contributions to workforce development. Her work addresses multiple community needs simultaneously: creating career pathways for underemployed individuals, helping health care providers meet staffing requirements, and ensuring that high-quality care remains available for vulnerable populations.
