Dr. Kwame Akoto serves as primary care physician and assistant physician in chief at Kaiser Permanente South Baltimore County Medical Center, where his career has focused on providing exceptional patient care and addressing health care disparities.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, Akoto earned his medical degree from the Morehouse School of Medicine in 2006. He completed his residency in family and community medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident.

Since joining Kaiser Permanente in 2009, Akoto has ascended to leadership positions, including site lead at South Baltimore Medical Center, assistant physician in chief for resource utilization and chief of medical specialties overseeing allergy, endocrinology, infectious disease, pulmonology, nephrology and rheumatology. He currently chairs the technology committee for the Permanente Medical Group.

“I have provided my patients with exceptional care and helped tens of thousands of patients in Maryland get the care they need in compassionate and efficient ways,” Akoto stated.

His clinical focus emphasizes preventive care, particularly for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Akoto has implemented several programs to enhance patient care, including weekly multidisciplinary rounds to improve coordination between primary care and specialties.

“I am deeply committed to identifying and addressing health care disparities among different groups, striving to close those gaps and promote equitable care for all my patients,” he said.
