Kaiser Permanente
Center for Healthy Weight and Lifestyle Medicine
The Center for Healthy Weight and Lifestyle Medicine at Kaiser Permanente has established itself as a pioneer in comprehensive weight management through evidence-based, patient-centered approaches since formally launching in 2025.
Located in Hyattsville, the center brings together physicians, coaches and nutritionists who work collaboratively to help patients improve their health through sustainable weight management strategies rather than focusing on service fees.
“Our lifestyle and weight loss physician experts design nonsurgical and surgical treatment plans and programs based on the most effective, evidence-based approaches to weight loss,” said Dr. Michele Arthurs with the center.
The center offers diverse weight management options, including wellness classes, coaching sessions, a diabetes prevention program, physician-led lifestyle medicine programs and bariatric surgery. These services are coordinated through Kaiser Permanente’s robust electronic medical record system, allowing seamless communication among providers.
The results have been impressive. Since 2019, the diabetes prevention program has helped 860 patients lose more than 9,500 pounds collectively. The program received full recognition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is offered at no cost to Kaiser Permanente members.
The center’s Healthy Weight by Design program, launched in 2021, has engaged 381 active participants with 177 additional members participating. Led by trained lifestyle coaches, these programs focus on sustainable dietary changes and physical activity.
“A healthy weight is important for longevity, energy and mood, bone and joint mobility, restful sleep and preventing or reducing the risk of chronic health conditions,” noted Arthurs.
Arthurs leads a team of lifestyle medicine physicians, bariatric surgeons and wellness professionals who engage with the community through speaking events, including discussions on nutrition and diabetes prevention, that are held in New Carrollton.
The center’s physicians also produce the Healthier You Podcast, sharing actionable strategies for health improvement in 10– to 20-minute episodes available on multiple platforms.
Through its multifaceted approach to weight management, the center continues to advance Kaiser Permanente’s mission of preventing chronic disease through accessible, integrated care.
