President & CEO, The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County

Before being named president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County, Mary White Spencer, a longtime resident of the county, served as Director of Advancement for The Key School in Annapolis and as the first executive director of the Washington D.C.-based Encore Creativity for Older Adults.

“I have spent the majority of my professional life in the nonprofit sector,” Spencer said.

In her role as head of the community foundation, which promotes philanthropy and identifies critical needs in the county, Spencer said she is “in a unique position to be able to serve as a philanthropic matchmaker between philanthropists and the causes they care about, and the needs of our community and the nonprofits addressing those needs.”

Since beginning her tenure at the foundation in 2018, she noted, assets have grown by 146% to $10 million.

“One of my strengths as a leader is the ability to bring individuals who have different lived experiences, skills, perspectives and areas of expertise together to form really powerful teams,” Spencer said.

“Whether it be building a strong staff team or an effective, diverse nonprofit board, my professional successes have always been tied to the amazing people I have by my side. I also bring a clear vision of what the organization’s future can be and the strategic direction needed to get there,” she added.
