Alex Smith founded the group in 2012 with the launch of Harbor East Deli & Pizzeria, and Eric soon joined him to expand the group’s vision. Together, they have developed more than 30 unique dining concepts across multiple states, making Atlas the largest restaurant group employer in Maryland.

The brothers’ success is deeply rooted in their commitment to work and a love for their hometown, inspired by their late grandfather, John Paterakis Sr., the founder of H&S Bakery who was also instrumental in developing Baltimore’s Harbor East area. Whether it is the sophisticated ambiance of Tagliata, the exotic flavors of Azumi or the speakeasy allure of The Elk Room, each Atlas venue elevates Baltimore’s culinary reputation.

Their partnership thrives on mutual respect and a shared goal. “We’ve never had an argument,” Eric noted, emphasizing their seamless collaboration. “We never even really argued as kids,” Alex chimed in. “There’s not a single day that goes by that Eric and I don’t talk five times a day.” Alex oversees the group’s financial and strategic direction, while Eric manages the beverage programs and day-to-day operations. Together, they foster a culture where hard work and respect are paramount.

Beyond their restaurant portfolio, the Smith brothers are dedicated to Baltimore’s future, actively supporting local organizations and charities.
