Walmart announced that it plans to close its Towson store on April 5.

In a news release, the company said Wednesday it was not an easy decision but said that some of its nearly 5,000 stores across the country do not perform to financial expectations.

The store is located at 1238 Putty Hill, Ave. in the Towson Place shopping center that features a Target on one side and an Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. The pharmacy at the location will also close on April 5. Pharmacy staff will work with customers to transfer their prescriptions to another Walmart location.

The Walmart featured a unique two-level design that took over space vacated by Montgomery Ward. The store has been a feature of the shopping center for nearly 20 years.

The release said the 207 associates at the store are eligible to transfer to another location and will be paid through June 14. Those who do not transfer by that date will receive a severance package.

No additional closures are planned for the region at this time. Walmart has 60 stores and Sam’s Clubs in Maryland and employs more than 17,350 associates in the state, the release said. In 2023, the company contributed $6.4 million in cash or in-kind donations to state and local nonprofits across Maryland.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our store in Towson,” Alicia Anger, Walmart global communications director, said in the release. “We look forward to continuing to serve them at any of seven other locations across the area, on walmart.com and through delivery to their home or business.”
