Why is community service critical to your career and your personal leadership journey?
As exciting and innovative as a job can be, the needs of people and our community stretch well beyond the 9-5. Engaging in and encouraging community service is critical to building a network of support, and protects our collective mental and physical well-being. I am lucky that the priorities of M&T and my role there marry up with my personal passion of serving Baltimore’s schools and not-for-profit organizations, working to ensure children have a strong educational foundation and opportunities for choice and growth throughout their lives. The mental, physical, and emotional connections we make in service afford us the opportunity to learn more about the world, our neighbors, and the needs of others, and encourage understanding and flexibility as a business leader.
There are as many as five generations in the workplace currently. All are very different in needs and the way they communicate. How do you lead through collaboration with all generations and the strengths you find in each one? In particular in the new workplace normal we are working through now how are the generations coming together differently to succeed as a team?
Each generation has a different view of the world and brings a wealth of experience. Sharing these perspectives builds a strong foundation of support and encourages innovation. A variety of age groups at work can mimic a family structure, and a solid family structure tends to hold strong in both good and difficult times. I encourage collaboration and mentorship to foster a positive work environment, and create opportunities for advancement by being open to listening to different experiences and ideas.
