There are as many as five generations in the workplace currently. All are very different in needs and the way they communicate. How do you lead through collaboration with all generations and the strengths you find in each one? In particular in the new workplace normal we are working through now how are the generations coming together differently to succeed as a team?
It’s important to make space for everyone. As creatures of habit, we tend to want to only champion that which we’ve always done and judge anything new or that would force us to change how we work. With up to five different generations in the workplace, one can assume there are at least five different ways of working – based on each generation’s preferences, experiences, expectations, etc. And when you layer individual backgrounds and culture norms, it gets even murkier. So, the best way to lead is from a place of openness and acceptance. We can no longer force people to contort themselves to “our way” of doing things, because the global marketplace’s doors have flung wide open, and people have more options now than ever. Leaders must be willing to change and expand the table for all people.
