BRUCE E. JARRELL, MD, FACS
PRESIDENT
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, BALTIMORE

The Caroline County native would go on to hold a number of executive positions, including dean of the University of Maryland Graduate School, executive vice president and provost and chief academic and research officer and senior vice president. After serving as interim president for eight months, Jarrell was named the school’s seventh president in September 2020.
What’s the most important thing you do in your job?
The University of Maryland, Baltimore, confers the majority of health care, human services, and law professional degrees in Maryland each year, and my job is to make sure that we are creating a strong, welcoming culture at UMB that allows each of those students to make a positive impact in the world.
Who was your most significant mentor, and what did you learn from that person?
I’ve had many mentors throughout my life. My public school teachers on the Eastern Shore, especially my physics teacher, taught me the value of hard work, being humble and learning for the sake of learning.
If you weren’t in this industry, what would you be doing?
I would be learning and developing new metalsmithing skills and teaching metalsmithing to the younger generation.
