A Maryland biopharmaceutical company on Tuesday announced mixed results for its phase 2 clinical trial of its experimental antidepressant.

The study, by -based Inc. of its NSI-189 drug, given once and twice daily to treat major depressive disorder, didn’t show a statistically significant reduction in depression symptoms on the Montgomery-Asberg depression rating scale, though a once-daily dose treatment did have statistical significance on the patient-rated symptoms of depression questionnaire.

The once-daily dose showed patient improvement on the Montgomery-Asberg scale. Results also showed patient improvement on the Hamilton depression rating scale at both doses.

Rich Daly, chairman and CEO of Neuralstem, said in a statement that he was encouraged by the results and that the company would continue to evaluate its data on the trial.
