FREDERICK — The owner of a convenience store where a clerk disarmed a shotgun-wielding man now says the worker is still employed at the store.

7-Eleven store owner Abdul Ayub told The Frederick News-Post on Wednesday that not only was Joseph Layman not fired, but he also got a raise and was promoted to a manager.

Ayub had initially told the newspaper Tuesday that Layman would be terminated for violating after the clerk confronted the armed suspect July 12. But Ayub said he made a “mistake” in saying Layman was fired after growing frustrated with the number of phone calls his store received from media outlets.

Ayub says his 7-Eleven store near Frederick isn’t a corporate location, meaning owners make all decisions regarding the hiring or termination of employees.
