House, Senate schedule first veto override votes

Legislators in the House Wednesday will attempt to override at least some of the six bills and one capital budget item vetoed Gov. .

On tap for Wednesday will be override votes on a hotel tax bill, another that will allow felons serving parole or probation to vote and Hogan’s line item veto of a $2 million grant for Maryland Hall Center for the Arts in Annapolis.

Typically, the scheduling of a vote is an indication that supporters of an override have the necessary votes. In the House, 85 votes are needed to override a governor’s veto. The Senate needs 29.

The Senate was expected to take up at least some of the vetoed bills Wednesday but those votes are now delayed one day.

On Thursday, the Senate is scheduled to take up override votes on the statewide online hotel tax bill, the civil forfeiture bill and the marijuana paraphernalia bill. The vote was delayed to allow for a senator who has a medical appointment to also be present for the veto override votes.
