How to anonymously track your emails
Imagine being in a judge’s chambers with opposing counsel before a big hearing or a trial. The issue is whether some evidence you recently found should be allowed, since opposing counsel did not have enough time to review or even see the evidence before trial. You sent the opposing counsel the evidentiary emails a few days before the hearing, of course, but he swears that he either: did not receive your email; or that he did not have a chance to review your email or the attached evidence.
Well, with programs such as Whoreadme.com you can track your emails and attachments to see if they were opened, down to that user’s particular IP address. In other words, you can say to the judge in the scenario above that the other attorney did, in fact, open your email AND review the attachment for 12 minutes. You can also see if opposing counsel has forwarded your email to another person or IP address. Whoreadme, which is a free service, sends you a receipt when the email is opened.
This service is also a good way for lawyers to track when — and if — their clients read their emails. Similarly, email tracking services are helpful if you are applying to anything over email to check the status of your application.
