Challenge to Jalisi’s candidacy dismissed
An Anne Arundel County Circuit Court judge Monday dismissed a lawsuit that some hoped would result in the removal of Del. Hasan M. “Jay” Jalisi, D-Baltimore County.
William T. Newton, a Republican who unsuccessfully ran for one of three seats in the same district as Jalisi, filed the suit against the Maryland State Board of Elections and its administrator, Linda Lamone, last fall after questions arose about the freshman delegate’s actual residence.
“The judge wondered out loud if voter’s for Jalisi ‘would be disenfranchised’ but he gave no weight to all the voter’s and citizens of the 10th district who are being disenfranchised due to Jalisi’s deception,” Newton said in an emailed statement.
Newton and others charged that Jalisi did not live in a commercially zoned home along the 11000 block of Resiterstown Road that doubled as his campaign headquarters. Instead, they alleged that he lived with his wife and two children in a nearly 3,900 square-foot home on a two-acre wooded lot near Caves Valley Country Club that he purchased in 2009 for $776,000, according to state records.
The two houses are less than 8 miles apart but are in two different legislative districts.
Jalisi, who was not a defendant in Newton’s lawsuit, has maintained that he lives at the Reisterstown Road address.
Newton said he plans to file an appeal.
