Md. company pleads guilty to water pollution

DUNDALK — A Baltimore County company that makes sports coating for surfaces like tennis courts has pleaded guilty to water pollution and agreed to pay $20,000 to the Maryland Clean Water Fund.

The Maryland attorney general’s office says Latex-Ite International also was ordered Thursday to implement new procedures for how it applies its acrylic coating to recreational surfaces to minimize the impact on water.

Latex-Ite, based in Dundalk, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

Prosecutors say the company is responsible for twice contaminating a stream in Owings Mills in 2012. They say the stream turned blue and sudsy after the company resurfaced tennis courts at a school.

The contaminated stream, which flows into the Jones Fall watershed, has a number of aquatic species and is used for trout fishing.
