Lockheed develops desalination product

As it continues to diversify in the face of reduced defense spending, the Lockheed Martin Corp., of Bethesda, the world’s largest defense contractor, announced that it has been granted a patent by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for Perforene, a molecular filtration material designed to meet the growing global demand for potable water.

According to Lockheed, Perforene works by removing sodium, chlorine and other ions from sea water and other sources, thereby enabling desalination at a fraction of the cost of industry-standard reverse osmosis systems.

The company said it is currently seeking commercialization partners.
