In-House Interrogatory
Asked: Our weekly question to the In-House community
Most professionals do not think the job of in-house counsel and compliance officer should overlap, according to a new survey.
A compliance officer makes sure a company is following regulatory requirements and employees are following company policy.
About 88 percent of compliance professionals insisted that this role should not fall under a general counsel‘s responsibilities, according to a survey by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and Health Care Compliance Association. Most said the jobs are singular and require full-time responsibilities. Plus, many thought a compliance officer needed to be independent to do the job.
Of those surveyed, 80 percent said a company’s compliance officer should not have to report to a general counsel.
Do you think a company’s GC should also be its compliance officer?
