Trash, stormwater among proposed Baltimore budget fixes

Trash fees and storm-water credits are among the solutions for Baltimore‘s budget problems.

City officials released a budget plan Wednesday to help deal with a projected $750 million deficit over the next decade.

The plan calls for a pay-as-you-throw pricing approach on trash to encourage recycling and cut the amount of trash residents produce. The report also calls for a vacant property demolition surge and development of a credit system for helping developers meet stormwater management obligations. Developers unable to cut stormwater runoff would be able to pay into a fund to maintain cleared, green lots in the city.

The plan also calls for cutting the number of full-time city employees by 10 percent and having remaining employees contribute up to 5 percent of their salary to cover pension costs.
