State debt collector pays $30K to settle ADA case

A Pasadena debt collection law firm has agreed to a $30,000 settlement with the U.S. over alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act involving deaf people.

Peroutka & Peroutka employees allegedly hung up on one caller and told another to call back and speak with a manager when they contacted the firm about money they allegedly owed.

Two deaf complainants will receive $15,000 each, the Justice Department said, and the firm has agreed to accept Video Relay Service calls and accommodate deaf individuals in face-to-face meetings, including using sign language interpreters.
