Brown honored by ACLU of Maryland
Chris Brown of Brown, Goldstein & Levy has received the 2012 Elisabeth Gilman Award from the ACLU of Maryland for his commitment and impact as general counsel of the ACLU and his lifetime of legal service to civil liberties and ACLU clients.
Chris served as the ACLU board chairman from 1980 until 1991 and the ACLU of Maryland’s general counsel since 1995. During his years at the helm, the ACLU legal program staff grew by ten-fold. Under Chris’s guidance, the ACLU launched its Eastern Shore racial justice project, which filed first-generation civil rights cases, including multiple voting rights lawsuits that changed the racial and social landscape of the entire Shore. Thanks to Chris’s work on those and many other cases, thousands of Marylanders owe him an enormous debt of gratitude.
The ACLU of Maryland has also created a special “C. Christopher Brown Award” to honor persons, like Chris, who have made a significant contribution to the legal work of the ACLU of Maryland. This year’s recipient of the C. Christopher Brown Award is Carl O. Snowden.
