Md. GOP chair Mooney drops House bid, keeps Bartlett job

WASHINGTON — The Maryland Republican Party chairman apparently erred by working for while simultaneously being a candidate for Bartlett’s seat.

The Washington Post reports that dropped his candidacy for 2014 in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District after the newspaper contacted Bartlett’s office.

Payroll records show Mooney has been on Bartlett’s staff since June. Four months earlier, he filed a statement of candidacy for 2014 with the Federal Commission. House ethics rules say that if a congressional worker becomes a candidate to succeed his boss in office, he must terminate his congressional employment.

Bartlett is a 10-term Republican seeking re-election in November.

The says Mooney should return the money he earned as a Bartlett aide since June.
