Thefts prompt water shut-off at Md. state park

CUMBERLAND — The Department of Natural Resources says it has shut off the drinking-water spigot at Big Run State Park in western Maryland because local residents were using most of the water.

The Cumberland Times-News reported in its Monday edition that the spigot was turned off in December. Chris Bushman of the Maryland Park Service says some farmers were filling large water tanks at the tap.

He says the agency was paying more to have the water made safe to drink than it received in camping fees at the park. Bushman says the nightly camping fee has been cut to $10 from $15 because there’s no drinking water.

Big Run is a primitive campground at the northern end of the Savage River Reservoir in Garrett County.
