Anne Arundel Co. executive indicted for alleged misconduct

ANNAPOLIS — A grand jury has indicted the Anne Arundel County executive for allegedly misusing his police protection squad for his benefit, including removing signs of political opponents and asking officers to wait while he engaged in sexual activity with a county employee in commercial parking lots.

State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt announced the indictment Friday of John Leopold by an Anne Arundel County grand jury. It charges the Republican Leopold with four counts of misconduct in office and one count of fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary.

Leopold, who is 69 and not married, said Friday he would fight the charges. “The state prosecutor has had his opportunity to present his side of the story, and I look forward to my side of the story being heard,” he said.

Davitt says public officials criminally abuse the public’s trust when they treat public resources as their property and public personnel as their servants.
