Rockville-based BioReliance sold to St. Louis firm

Sigma-Aldrich Corp., a St. Louis-based supplier of chemicals to research laboratories, said it completed its acquisition of Rockville-based BioReliance Holdings Inc., a contract research provider for biomedical and pharmaceutical companies.

Sigma-Aldrich paid New York-based Avista Capital Partners $350 million in cash.

BioReliance has labs and sales operations in the U.S., U.K., Japan and India, and employs more than 650 people worldwide.

Privately held BioReliance generated revenue of approximately $110 million in the year ended Dec. 31, 2010; results from 2011 were unavailable.
