New solos: entrepreneurs or unemployed?

Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich has an op-ed in today’s New York Times pointing out that the emperor has no clothes. He writes that, although statistics showing an increase in entrepreneurial activity have been touted as great news, they really signal the last refuge of the unemployed. Downsized, right-sized, with pint-sized unemployment checks coming in, people had no choice but to go into business for themselves.

This put me in mind of all the new solo practitioners out there, “inspired” to strike out on their own because there just weren’t any other options.
